Mile High Madness!
Welcome to the November 2012 edition of Mile High Madness. This year is moving by at an extremely rapid pace. Before jumping into the upcoming Chapter news, let's recap the month of October.
ALA Region 4 Conference & Exposition:
The Mile High Chapter hosted the ALA Region 4 Conference & Exposition October 4-6, 2012. The Conference was a huge success. I want to thank all of the Mile High Chapter members who attended the conference and all of the Chapter volunteers who helped ensure that the Conference went off without a hitch.
If you attended the conference and are eligible for the Chapter subsidy, please remember to submit your reimbursement request along with your registration receipt/confirmation to Treasurer Mark Richey at [email protected] no later than Tuesday, November 6, 2012. If you do not submit your reimbursement request by that date you will not receive a subsidy!
During the Region 4 Conference Jerry McPeake and Stacie Hedrick represented the Mile High Chapter at the Regional Council Meeting. During the meeting the Region 4 team emphasized the importance of service at the Regional and International level of the Association. There are many opportunities for members to serve either on committees or as a regional officers. We encourage anyone interested in participating to look at many of the volunteer options available. Please check out the minutes of the Regional Council Meeting attached hereto for a full recap of the meeting.
Denver Public Schools Career Fair:
The Mile High Chapter participated in the Denver Public Schools career fair held on October 10, 2012 at the National Western Stock Show Complex. Over 4,000 students attended the Career Fair. The Mile High Chapter promoted managerial careers in the legal administration field along with lawyer and non-lawyer career choices in law firms. The Chapter handed out fliers on those career opportunities and included resume tips for students to use to begin putting together their resumes. The Chapter also gave out pens with the MHC website address and in the spirit of Halloween handed out candy to the students.
October ALA Webinar:
The October Webinar was held on October 17, 2012 at the offices of Welborn Sullivan Meck & Tooley, P.C. The topic, presented by Sally Schmidt, was Marketing on a Shoestring Budget. The program focused on how your firm can employ a range of cost-effective strategies to gain exposure, differentiate itself, and generate new business with no-cost and low-cost techniques that produce results.
October Educational Luncheon:
The October Educational Luncheon was held on October 18, 2012 at the Marriott Courtyard in downtown Denver. The speakers were Heidi Doescher, Esq. and Stephen Parker, Esq. from Ogletree Deakins. The presentation, HR Forms and Issues, covered the basic forms required by State and Federal employment agencies and addressed some new form revisions. The session covered some of the dos and don'ts associated with pre-employment screenings and various HR policy recommendations.
Community Connection Event:
The Chapter held a Community Challenge event on Thursday, October 25, 2012, Trick-or-Treat for Lupus. The event was in honor of MHC Member Christine Hashemi's daughter, Sarah Hashemi, who passed away from Lupus this year. Participants were encouraged to dress in costume and display their talents in exchange for dollars. Several of the Chapter's business partners participated and donated food and drinks for the event. All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Colorado Lupus Foundation. If you would like to contribute to this cause, please contact Roxanna Krueger at [email protected]
