So you think you’re neutral when making decisions when it comes to retention of firm talent?

According to CO RPC 8.4(g) and Comments (3-4), biased conduct affects other counsel, judges, and other legal professionals. It's not enough for employers to have policies and procedures in place to address bias.  Individual attorneys, particularly senior attorneys, also can help minimize the impact of bias with their young diverse attorneys, particularly as it relates to retention.  This presentation will share ten tips that  attorneys can take minimize implicit bias that affects their attorneys and make a difference in both their retention and advancement.” 

Session Objectives:

  1. Define diversity, inclusive workplace, implicit bias and other key terms used in presentation while including context with CO RPC 8.4(g) and Comments 3-4.
  2. Discuss current events and articles, and the impact they may have on retention of attorneys, particularly those who come from backgrounds that are underrepresented in the profession.
  3. Provide 10 action-items that individuals may undertake to help their organizations retain diverse talent and create an inclusive workplace.

Karen Hester, JD, LL.M. in Taxation, has more than 10 years of experience working in diversity and inclusiveness. In 2015, she was named a Diversity Champion by NALP’s Diversity & Inclusion Section, which recognized 11 individuals nationally. She is an accomplished trainer, presenter, facilitator, and industry leader on the topic of diversity and inclusion in the legal profession.

Karen is a former practicing attorney and the former Director of Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Kansas School of Law. She has multiple degrees: a law degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Law, an LL.M. in Taxation from the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Law, an M.S. in student personnel and counseling, and a B.S. in mathematics from Kansas State University.

This session has been approved for the following continuing education re-certification credits:

This course has been approved for 1.0 General CLE credits, from Colorado Supreme Court, Board of Continuing Legal & Judicial Education. 

CLM Application Credit for Functional Specialists:  1.5 hours in the subject ares of Human Resources Management toward teh additional hours required of some Functional Specialists to fulfill the CLM application requirement.

CLM Recertification Credit: 1.5 hours in the subject area of Human Resources Management.

This program is valid for 1.5 PDCs toward SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP recertification.
